Well as I posted earlier, I want to make a video on people who have gone through many hardships in life. I started thinking about the hardships people can go through and decided that abuse was a hardship that is difficult to overcome. "Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States" (http://www.childhelp.org/). I feel like every help there is to prevent abuse is necessary because there is never too much help. Looking at those numbers, I know that people who have been abused will appreciate any and every help they can get. I want to try to inspire these people to keep their heads up high and to not linger on the past.
The first thing I did for this project was researching abuse and what I found was pretty disturbing. For example, "8 out of 10 sexual abusers are someone that is apart of the family", and "for every reported abuse incident, about two others are unreported" (http://www.dosomething.org/ For more facts about abuse I recommend the sites http://www.dosomething.com/, http://www.childhelp.org/, http://pediatrics.about.com/od/childabuse/a/05_abuse_stats.htm, and http://www.yesican.org/ The reasons why I found these sites to be interesting was that not only did it give you facts abuse, it gave support and help for abused people. If it isn't "treated" then it will control their lives. It will corrupt their minds, making them think that it is their fault for being abused. They will learn to depend on others and to trust no one. But it doesn't have to be this way! It is possible to live a healthy life after getting help.
http://www.safe4all.org/ is a site that really stood out to me. This site was created by the S.A.F.E. (stop abuse for everybody) organizations where they helped other service providers expand their organization, where they included a online support group, and where they accepted donations to help abused people. This site gave real life experiences of people who were abused and still are being abused. It also gave support and advice on how to overcome their past. There is a blog on this site where people can just write freely and not worry about being criticized. I want to try to contact this organization to get advise about my project. I am also hoping that they will support my project in any way possible.
This is a good post, is there an e-mail?
ReplyDeleteThis is a good start but what was it that inspired to help others? It is very important to get everyone informed everyday about how to speak up and break away from the chains of abuse. It is very admirable that you have chosen such a complex subject to address.
ReplyDeletewell having to go through a similar situation inspired me to do this. it was hard to deal with for me and I'm sure it's hard for others. It is very important to make sure these stories are heard. there are so many cases out there that it is more likely for one to hear more than one case of abuse.
ReplyDeletethank you Elber but what's good about it? do you have any suggestions? and an e-mail to what exactly?
ReplyDeleteWould you be able to film something based on the stories left on the SAFE site?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'll ask.
